Celebrating it's 149th Birthday in 2007, the building that is now the home to
The Medina Steakhouse & Saloon,
has quite a history.
Harrison Blake is credited with having the building built in 1858 for use as a stagecoach stop. Blake, a former Colonel with the Union Army in the Civil War became a U.S. Representative and also founded the Old Phoenix Bank, the Republican Party in Medina and brought the first railroad to town.

There are stories, although undocumented, the building was also used as a stop for the Underground Railroad.

Over the years the building not only changed ownership, so did the services provided. From hotel to a brothel, bookie joint to a grocery store, saloon to steakhouse the building has been home to a diverse blend of Americana.

A bit of the building's history is featured in John Kachuba’s book “Ghosthunting Ohio”. John writes of a few of our resident’s - such as Annie - who have been seen, but not feared, on occasion at the Steakhouse. We’re talking about spirits and not what’s on the shelf behind the bar! There are many different stories about spirits inside the Steakhouse such as the one in 1970’s when one Mrs. Arndt owned the building. Mrs. Arndt’s son commonly drew pictures, and possibly befriended, a ghost he called Annie. During Mrs. Arndt’s ownership a fire broke out in the attic of the building. Given the age of the building, experts afterwards thought the building should have burned to the ground, but mysteriously didn’t. The rumor is Annie contained the fire until help arrived and thus became known as ‘Annie of the Inn’. To this day the rafters in the attic show signs of the fire and remind us of Annie.

Throughout the years, the building has gone through changes, the latest in 1997 when the Liberty Inn became The Medina Steakhouse & Saloon after a brief renovation. One thing has remained constant over the years, the desire to leave as much as the original building intact as possible. The stone foundation and wood floor, among a few other things, are believed to be part of the original building.

Even though The Medina Steakhouse & Saloon can no longer offer you lodging or some of the past services the building provided, we can promise you great food and a glimpse into the past!
